One in three people worldwide suffer from malnutrition, impacting individuals, businesses and economies alike. In the four years following its inception, the Workforce Nutrition Alliance (WNA), a joint initiative by The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), has helped companies support six million employees with workforce nutrition programmes. Over this time, WNA has doubled the number of countries assessing workforce nutrition and expanded its network from 14 to 100 partner organisations.

In 2019, WNA set a goal to support three million employees and supply chain workers by 2025, and ten million by 2030. It has already surpassed this goal, reaching six million employees ahead of schedule.

Workforce nutrition is crucial for companies that value employee wellbeing. It also drives business benefits: healthier employees lead to higher productivity, lower absenteeism, and better retention, ultimately reducing costs and driving good business.

To help companies improve their workforce nutrition programmes, three key tools have been developed by the WNA:

  • Self-Assessment Scorecard: evaluates programmes on four key areas: Healthy Food at Work, Nutrition Education, Nutrition-Focused Health Checks, and Breastfeeding Support.
  • Guidebook Series
  • Masterclass Series: offers HR and Sustainability professionals interactive group training sessions, coaching, and practical tools.
Bärbel Weiligmann, Programme Lead Workforce Nutrition, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) said, “Investing in employee health and wellbeing is estimated to create a total value of between $3.7 trillion and $11.7 trillion US dollars across global economies. The health of employees will always be integral to the health of the business.”

Sharon Bligh, Health and Sustainability Director of The Consumer Goods Forum said,“Through the Workforce Nutrition Alliance and our partnership with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), we’re supporting our member companies with the guidance and resources they need to integrate nutrition into their core business practices, driving faster progress in employee health and wellbeing.
