As industries navigate growing expectations for ethical sourcing, collaboration and innovation in sustainability standards are no longer optional – they are essential for building trust, ensuring compliance, and driving meaningful impact across global supply chains.

This was the focus in Berlin, as the Consumer Goods Forum’s Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative (SSCI) convened industry leaders for a series of collaborative events held alongside Fruit Logistica, the world’s leading trade fair for the fresh produce industry. With around 90,000 professionals from the fruit, vegetable and flower sectors gathered in the city, the SSCI activity this week captured a pivotal audience for discussion on strengthening sustainability standards. Key engagements during included SSCI led roundtables with stakeholders and the International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) Executive Leadership Summit, all reinforcing the urgent need for collective action in ethical sourcing and cross-sector collaboration.

Our stakeholder roundtable event, kindly hosted by Schörghuber Group at Bikini Berlin, and with support from partners IFPA and IDH, focused on critical topics such as how we can bridge the living wage gap and standardise environmental benchmarking across global supply chains.

Over 25 participants engaged in sector-specific conversation representing the floriculture, seed, seafood, forestry, and fresh produce sectors, as well as cross-sectoral trends. A key theme throughout the dynamic discussions was the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration, data integrity, continuous improvement, and exploring how the SSCI Recognition programme can support sustainability standards.

Florian Schneider, Procurement Director Paulaner Brewery Group / Schörghuber Group, said “Schörghuber Group is proud to host the SSCI stakeholder roundtable today. Today is about solutions. It’s about collaboration. It’s about taking responsibility beyond the minimum requirements and finding ways to make sustainability not a duty, but a competitive advantage. Because in the end, a supply chain that is not sustainable… is simply not future proof.”

Daniela España, Director, Florverde Sustainable Flowers, said “Achieving SSCI Recognition marks a significant milestone in Florverde® Sustainable Flowers’ commitment to sustainability, ethical business practices, and continuous improvement. As an independent social and environmental certification, we ensure that flower growers adopt measures that protect and enable workers’ rights, implement best environmental practices, and comply with national regulations.

At Florverde, we strongly support benchmarking initiatives like SSCI, as they bring much-needed harmonization to sustainability standards. By aligning with SSCI-recognized certifications, producers can avoid duplicative audits, reduce costs, and focus on delivering real impact rather than managing administrative burdens. SSCI is setting a global benchmark for social and environmental compliance, strengthening trust in certification schemes and driving transparency across supply chains.

The SSCI Roundtable in Berlin provided an excellent platform to engage with industry leaders on these critical issues. Discussions emphasized the need for cross-sector collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement in sustainability standards. By fostering meaningful dialogue and collective action, we are shaping a more responsible and ethical future for the floriculture industry.”

Following the day of roundtables, our Director of Sustainability, Didier Bergeret, joined a dynamic panel at IFPA’s “Sustainable Connections” event, part of their Executive Leadership Summit – an exclusive gathering of global executives and European retailers from the primary production sector focused on the industry’s most pressing challenges and opportunities. He was joined by Tamara Muruetagoiena, Vice President of Sustainability for IFPA, Ben Rivoire, Sustainability & Crop Value Chain Manager at International Seed Federation,  and Janis McIntosh, Director of Marketing Innovation & Sustainability at Naturipe Farms, for a productive discussion covering buyer requirements, global sustainability standards, and effective benchmarking.

Tamara Muruetagoiena, Vice President of Sustainability at IFPA, said “The Consumer Goods Forum SSCI meeting in Berlin was an enlightening experience. The discussions were insightful, particularly the emphasis on harmonizing environmental sustainability standards. I had an opportunity to share the perspectives of fruit, vegetable, and flower growers as well as our work as chair of the environmental working group. It was inspiring to see such a diverse group of stakeholders, from forestry, primary production and at sea operations working together towards a common goal of building trust and driving sustainability in the consumer goods sector.”

Didier Bergeret, Director of Sustainability at the CGF, said “Collaboration is key to driving meaningful progress in sustainability. In Berlin, we saw industry leaders aligning on critical priorities, from bridging the living wage gap to standardising environmental benchmarks. These discussions reinforced the need for collaborative action to ensure responsible sourcing and build trust in sustainability standards. The SSCI remains committed to fostering global conversations that drive real, measurable impact across global supply chains.”

We also attended Fruit Logistica, supporting our member IFPA at their stand, and also SSCI Recognised Sustainability Initiative of South Africa (SIZA) for their session with Fruit South Africa on navigating sustainability and compliance in the South African agriculture supply chain. These moments provided a further platform for sharing expertise, expanding networks, and fostering collaboration to drive innovation in sustainable supply chains.

Collaboration in partnership with Schörghuber Group, IFPA, and IDH truly amplified the impact of these events, enhancing their visibility and influence within the produce and sustainability sectors. These joint efforts underscored our commitment to accelerating progress toward a more sustainable future, emphasising the power of cross-sector collaboration, innovative solutions for social and environmental challenges, and building trust in sustainability standards. As responsible sourcing conversations continue to shape the global industry, we are dedicated to ensuring that business is recognised as a credible and a reliable partner in driving these efforts forward. With momentum building worldwide, we look forward to advancing these critical discussions and taking meaningful action throughout the year.
