Industry leaders convened in Atlanta last month for the The Consumer Goods Forum’s Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative (SSCI) Coalition Steering Committee meeting.
Key discussions revolved around responsible sourcing, collaboration opportunities, and aligning with environmental and social sustainability standards. These discussions were led by SSCI members, including Wyatt Maysey, Director of Sustainability (Taylor Farms); Jessica Meisinger, Global Animal health Sustainability Lead (MSD Animal Health); Janis McIntosh, Director of Marketing Innovation & Sustainability (Naturipe Farms); Florian Schneider, Procurement Director (Schörghuber Group); Tamara Muruetagoiena, Vice President of Sustainability (International Fresh Produce Association); and Smruti Govan, Human Rights & Sustainability Director (PepsiCo).
The meeting facilitated insightful discussions among members about their specific objectives and needs regarding sustainable sourcing. Participants reviewed progress on key initiatives aimed at promoting responsible sourcing and explored collaborative opportunities across various sectors, including fruits and vegetables, as well as seafood. By aligning responsible practices with environmental sustainability and ethical governance, the SSCI is actively contributing to the development of more resilient and sustainable supply chains.
In conjunction with this meeting, the SSCI co-hosted a productive stakeholder event alongside the International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) Sustainability Council, focusing on critical sustainability challenges within the produce industry. This event featured three insightful panels that brought together standard owners, growers, and retailers, providing a comprehensive overview of both opportunities and challenges in sustainable produce production and sourcing.
Key panelists included Roberta Anderson, President (Global GAP); Daniela España, Director (Florverde); Wyatt Maysey, Director of Sustainability (Taylor Farms); Armando García Angulo, Director of Sustainability (Grupo los Cerritos); Scott Dray, Sr. Director of Global Produce Sourcing (Walmart); Kristian Moeller, Managing Director (Appellando); and Nikki Cosio, Founder & CEO (Measure to Improve), who engaged in meaningful dialogue about the future of sustainability in the sector.
Additionally, Didier Bergeret, our Sustainability Director, participated in a panel at The Global Produce and Floral Show, hosted by IFPA. This session, moderated by Tamara Muruetagoiena and featuring Janis McIntosh, delved into current buyer requirements, global sustainability standards, and strategies to streamline sustainability reporting through effective benchmarking.
This event underscored the commitment of industry experts, standard owners, growers, and retailers to advancing sustainability in produce production and sourcing.
