The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) is pleased to announce that OXXO, a leading convenience store chain and subsidiary of FEMSA, has joined its Food Waste Coalition of Action. This collaboration underscores OXXO’s commitment to sustainability and aligns with the Coalition’s mission to halve per capita global food waste by 2030, in accordance with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12.3.

Teresa de la Garza, Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at FEMSA Proximity and Health, said:

OXXO has been proactive in implementing initiatives aimed at reducing food waste and promoting environmental responsibility. Notably:

  • Partnership with GoodMeal: In June 2024, OXXO Chile collaborated with GoodMeal to offer discounted “fast food” items nearing their expiration dates through GoodMeal’s platform. This initiative began with a pilot in ten stores and aimed to expand to 50 stores by December 2024, focusing on reducing food waste and enhancing sustainability efforts.

  • Food Security Initiative with Kellogg’s and BAMX: In October 2024, OXXO Mexico partnered with Kellogg’s and Mexico’s Food Bank (BAMX) to launch a campaign aimed at improving nutrition for vulnerable populations in Mexicothe country. The initiative planned to donate 2.4 million healthy food portions to benefit 100,000 families facing food insecurity across 30 states.

  • Food Bank Collaboration (BAMX): Since 2011 OXXO has been working with different food banks part of the Mexico’s Food Bank Association (BAMX) in all its distribution centers recovering more than 65% of products that were not sold at stores.
  • Zero Waste Goal: OXXO has been working towards achieving a Zero Waste to Landfill goal by 2030, implementing various sustainability measures including energy-saving projects and recycling programs.
