The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF)’s Plastic Waste Coalition of Action and Reposit are pleased to announce the successful completion of the design phase for its reusable packaging program, tailored for personal and home care categories in Ottawa, Canada. This initiative represents an industry-first collaboration between leading global retailers and consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands, working together to pioneer a standardized, scalable approach to reusable packaging. Designed with consumer convenience in mind, the program features a return-to-store model and an incentive-based “return for reward” system to encourage participation and foster long-term behaviour change.
As the program transitions into its next phase, the focus shifts to building the necessary reuse infrastructure, underpinned by a data-driven approach and consumer-centric design principles. With the first implementation set for Q1 2026, this represents a unique opportunity for companies to join this pioneering initiative ahead of its rollout.
Collaboration Driving Change
This multi-brand and multi-retailer initiative unites industry leaders in a shared mission to create a packaging-as-a-service model that benefits all stakeholders. By employing standardized, pooled packaging across brands, the program minimizes infrastructure costs and complexity while enabling brand differentiation through creative labelling and closures.
Reposit, a leader in returnable packaging platforms, has worked closely with Walmart, Loblaw Companies Limited, Unilever, L’Oreal, and Procter & Gamble to co-design the project balancing consumer needs, operational efficiency, and sustainability.
A Call to Action
With the detailed design phase now complete, the Coalition encourages forward-thinking retailers and manufacturers to join this initiative and contribute to its success. Be part of the next step toward a sustainable future where reusable packaging becomes the industry standard.
Together, we can revolutionize packaging systems and drive meaningful change in the fight against plastic pollution. Don’t wait—join now to help shape a circular economy that works for everyone.
