The Consumer Goods Forum’s (CGF) Plastic Waste Coalition is pleased to announce the successful completion of the 2024 review of the Golden Design Rules (GDRs) for plastic packaging. The GDRs are nine simple yet powerful packaging design principles created to help our industry to reduce plastic use, create better plastic, and improve recycling systems.

The comprehensive review has confirmed that the GDRs remain relevant and fully aligned with the latest legislation and industry guidance. The assessment process was rigorous, incorporating evaluations of key regulations, expert interviews, internal analyses, and member working sessions.

Five minor updates have been made to the GDR guidance, validated by the Design Workstream members. These changes are now available in the newly updated online version of the Golden Design Rules Factpack

As legislation continues to evolve, particularly in Europe, where the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) still holds unresolved definitions and rules, the CGF will continue to monitor these developments closely. The next review of the Golden Design Rules is planned for Q1 2026, or sooner if significant changes are detected.

We extend our gratitude to all members and experts who contributed to this process, ensuring the GDRs remain at the forefront of industry standards. For any questions or to receive the full assessment document, please reach out to environmental@theconsumergoodsforum.com.
