On 10 October 2024, the Consumer Goods Forum’s (CGF) Forest Positive Coalition (FPC) held a successful in-person workshop, bringing together over 20 key stakeholder companies.
The Coalition recognises that the fight against deforestation requires collective action across sectors, including governments; civil society organisations; suppliers and traders; and finance institutes. This proactive engagement approach, combined with accountability through public reporting, aims to achieve sustainable, forest positive outcomes.
During the meeting the Coalition reiterated the value of ongoing dialogue and expressed appreciation to stakeholders for their continued engagement. Transparency is at the core of the Coalition’s strategy, and it is therefore important to continue connecting with the wider stakeholder community to share our progress, strategies, and actions. Future opportunities for stakeholder engagement will include both in-person meetings and online discussions, aimed at fostering collaboration, sharing best practices, and addressing challenges collectively.
Key outcomes from the sessions include:
Coalition Progress and Potential Gaps:
- Stakeholders appreciated the progress achieved, but called for more accessible, detailed reporting on collective achievements and clearer communication through the website.
- Suggestions included expanding a landscape focus beyond tropical areas, incorporating learnings across various commodities, and integrating Indigenous and Human Rights considerations.
- Emphasis was placed on balancing stakeholder expectations with core Coalition goals.
Partnerships for Supply Chain Action:
- To accelerate impact, stakeholders recommended amplifying industry perspectives in commodity-producing regions and strengthening collaborations, particularly with the Human Rights Coalition.
- Engaging governments, the finance sector, and diverse industry groups is critical for progress.
Scaling Forest Positive Landscape Impact:
- Scaling initiatives require funding from diverse sources, local champions, and cross-sectoral collaboration.
- Focus on aligning company goals with on-the-ground initiatives, securing corporate and investor support, and promoting local ownership with exit strategies.
- Regulatory engagement is essential to remove barriers, and working across commodities in landscapes can enhance impact.
Improving Reporting and Transparency:
- Stakeholders called for better website usability and a comprehensive view of Coalition progress against KPIs.
- Clearer communication on challenges and key objectives is needed, with a revived Communications and Engagement Working Group to broaden outreach and stakeholder understanding.
