The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) Food Waste Coalition of Action Steering Committee met in London at the end of January, setting its sights on an ambitious 2025 agenda. The group is co-chaired by Chris Franke, Senior Manager of Global Sustainability at Walmart and Annabelle Souchon, Group CSR Manager at Bel Group, who took over the role at the end of 2024.

Over two days of meetings, the Coalition reviewed collaborative successes from 2024, including launching a business case for tackling food loss and waste, highlighting the climate opportunity of food waste reduction, launching the Global Farm Loss Tool with WWF to tackle food loss on farms, and consumer engagement initiatives like “The Sustainable Kitchen”, as well as the regional progress of CGF working groups in Japan, China, and Latin America.

Looking ahead, key priorities for 2025 include:

  • Forge Strategic Alliances: Partner with other CGF coalitions focused on emissions, plastics, and food safety to develop synergistic solutions.

  • Disseminate Expertise: Expand the reach of our valorization, donation, and date label best practices beyond the coalition through targeted knowledge-sharing initiatives.

  • Refine Data Analysis: Enhance data collection and analysis from the 2024 reporting cycle to generate actionable insights and drive impactful improvements.

  • Empower Consumers: Implement positive messaging campaigns and in-store best practices to motivate consumer action and drive meaningful change.

The Steering Committee had the opportunity to hear from key experts and participate in workshops designed to drive impactful action across these priority areas, led by WRAP, CapGemini, Futerra and The Chancery Lane Project.

A highlight was visiting a Tesco store, where members gained firsthand insights into effective food waste strategies in action—special thanks to the Tesco team for organizing this valuable experience!

The coalition is committed to driving progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, with a focus on halving food waste by 2030. By fostering collaboration and innovation, the CGF is empowering businesses to create a more sustainable future for food.

We extend our gratitude to all members for their dedication and leadership in shaping a future where less food is wasted, and more is saved for people and the planet.
