As The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) Forest Positive Coalition of Action launched its second Annual Report during an event at New York Climate Week last week, the Coalition was reminded of the importance of protecting human rights and environmental defenders thanks to demonstrations from several advocate groups.

The Coalition firmly believes that forest positive has to mean people positive, and these interventions reaffirmed the Coalition’s dedication to ensuring its approach to ending commodity-driven deforestation protects the rights, wellbeing, and livelihoods of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. The Coalition acknowledges it is essential for actors across sectors to share this same ambition, though the methods that each uses to achieve this ambition might differ.

This issue requires urgent, collective action, and the Coalition is currently working to ensure this is reflected in its strategy by collaborating with human rights organisations, including the CGF’s Human Rights Coalition – Working to End Forced Labour, and other stakeholder groups. However, the Coalition is also taking care to ensure this work includes perspectives from across sectors, aligns well with existing initiatives, and can deliver sustainable results.

The Coalition invites any interested organisations to engage in dialogue with the Coalition on this issue, and welcomes feedback from its stakeholder community at any time via email at forestpositive@theconsumergoodsforum.com.
