Cédric Dever, Director of The Consumer Goods Forum’s (CGF) Plastic Waste Coalition of Action, has returned from a pivotal week in Busan, where he participated in the 5th session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) on a Global Plastics Treaty. While INC-5 did not deliver a final agreement, it marked an important step forward.

More than 100 countries are now aligned on critical measures, including phasing out harmful plastics and limiting production to sustainable levels. The Chair’s Text has also laid essential groundwork on areas like product design and waste management. These elements are vital as we move toward INC-5.2, which will continue shaping the treaty.

For businesses, this progress is encouraging, but the absence of binding rules remains a challenge. “We need a robust, enforceable framework to drive meaningful action,” says Cédric. “The CGF’s Plastic Waste Coalition is leading the charge, working closely with the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty (BCGPT) to engage governments and ensure that the final treaty provides the clarity and ambition needed for businesses to invest and scale sustainable solutions.”

The Coalition has already made significant advances, particularly in areas directly linked to the Chair’s Text, such as promoting innovative product designs and enhancing waste management strategies. These efforts underscore our commitment to shaping a future where businesses thrive within planetary boundaries.

Looking ahead, INC-5.2 offers a chance to transform ambition into action. The CGF’s Plastic Waste Coalition will continue to champion binding global rules, mobilising members and partners to support the negotiations.

Stay tuned for updates as we work toward securing a treaty that benefits both people and the planet. Follow our Coalition’s journey and explore how we’re driving change.
