At Bel Group, we believe that reducing food waste and tackling food insecurity requires innovative solutions and strong partnerships. In Canada, we have joined forces with Congebec and Food Banks of Quebec (FBQ) to launch an initiative aimed at redistributing quality food that might otherwise go to waste. This effort aligns with our broader commitment to building more sustainable supply chains and improving access to nutritious food for those in need.
Enhancing Food Redistribution Efforts
More than 46% of food is wasted each year in Canada, making food waste a significant issue. As part of our goal to reduce waste across our operations, we are proud to contribute to this new initiative, led by Congebec, to recover unsellable but still edible food and redirect it to Quebec’s food banks. The program operates through a three-stage approach: providing free storage space for FBQ, encouraging participation from industry partners, and optimizing logistics to ensure effective redistribution. This approach allows food that may have otherwise been discarded due to minor damage to be preserved and made available to communities facing food insecurity.
Tackling Food Insecurity Through Collaboration
The demand for food assistance has risen sharply, with a 13% increase in requests in 2024 (since 2023) and one million more people relying on food aid in 2024, compared to 2021. Children make up 35% of food bank beneficiaries, while many working individuals still struggle to afford sufficient food. Through our partnership with Congebec and FBQ, we are working to ensure more food reaches those who need it most.

Collaboration across industries is key to making a lasting impact. As an active member of The Consumer Goods Forum’s (CGF) Food Waste Coalition of Action, we are contributing to global efforts to reduce food waste. Sharing best practices, fostering innovation, and forming partnerships are critical steps toward building a more sustainable and efficient food system.
Looking Ahead
Addressing food waste is a shared responsibility, and partnerships like this demonstrate the role that businesses can play in driving positive change. By working together to improve food redistribution networks and optimize supply chains, we can make meaningful progress toward reducing waste and supporting food security.
