PARIS, 26 November 2024 — The Consumer Goods Forum’s (CGF) Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative (SSCI) is pleased to announce that Fairness, Integrity, Safety, and Health (FISH) Standard for Crew has successfully completed the SSCI Benchmarking process and achieved SSCI Recognition.
FISH has successfully benchmarked against the SSCI’s Social Compliance: At-Sea Operations scope. In achieving SSCI Recognition, FISH demonstrates leadership in the effort to build credibility among sustainability standards worldwide and joins six SSCI-recognised schemes, and five additional schemes currently in progress for recognition. Through this benchmarking process, SSCI continues its commitment to building trust in social and environmental sustainability standards by recognising programmes that uphold key criteria set by leading industry stakeholders.
FISH is a voluntary, third-party labour certification program for wild harvest fishing vessels. FISH is designed to provide harvesters a tool to demonstrate to customers and other stakeholders that their fleets have achieved the highest levels of performance with respect to crew treatment and conditions.
Based upon ILO-C188 and related guidance, FISH was developed with input from harvesters, processors, retailers and restaurant groups, in consultation with labour non-profit organisations, to create a program that is open to fishing vessels and fleets of all sizes around the globe.
“We are proud to join the handful of programs that have been recognized by SSCI, a robust recognition process which affirms, and sends a strong signal to the marketplace as to, the credibility of our program” stated Fridrik Fridriksson, Chairman of FISH Board of Directors.
“With labor on fishing vessels an ongoing concern among stakeholders, practical approaches are needed to help address these concerns. We believe FISH can serve as one tool and tangible action that can play a positive role in supply chain due diligence and ultimately help improve conditions for fishers.”
Didier Bergeret, Director of Sustainability at the CGF, said “SSCI recognition of the FISH Standard for Crew signifies a crucial step towards greater transparency and credibility in the seafood supply chain. By benchmarking and recognising robust standards like FISH, we empower businesses and consumers to make informed choices and support genuinely sustainable practices.”
By recognising sustainability standards, the SSCI ensures transparency and credibility, making it easier for businesses to identify and support truly ethical and sustainable practices.
As SSCI-Recognised standards, third-party auditing, monitoring, and certification schemes and programmes signal a strong commitment to raising the bar in their certification processes and driving harmonisation in a diverse field of sustainability standards, while at the same time remain free to innovate their approaches to ensure sustainability in a dynamic way.
Today’s announcement demonstrates that FISH Standard for Crew meets the industry’s expectations and is now fully recognised by the SSCI.
