While a significant portion of food is wasted along the food supply chain, majority occurs at the household level. United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) data indicates that approximately 60% of total food waste is generated in homes, contributing significantly to climate change and resource depletion.
Our Coalition of Action is dedicated to achieving the UN’s SDG 12.3 target: halving food waste at retail and consumer levels by 2030. However, driving change at the household level comes with unique challenges. From deeply rooted cultural attitudes toward food to the misconception that individual actions are too small to make an impact, there are many barriers that hinder progress.
Overcoming these challenges requires innovative approaches to communicate effectively with consumers and inspire them to take action to lower their household waste. Together, as an industry, we are committed to empowering people to make a tangible difference in the fight against food waste.
Our #TooGoodToWaste campaign, encourages members of the food industry to join forces in raising awareness and educating consumers on practical ways to reduce household food waste. By sharing helpful tips, insights, and strategies with the #TooGoodToWaste hashtag, we aim to foster a community that supports behavioural shifts toward more mindful food consumption.
In 2024, the Coalition teamed up with the Collaboration for Healthier Lives Coalition to introduce The Sustainable Kitchen—an online resource created to support companies in driving consumer engagement. This platform aims to inspire recipes that encourage behaviour change, fostering both the reduction of food waste and the adoption of healthier eating habits.
By coming together and amplifying our message, we can empower consumers to make a real difference in reducing food waste globally
