This case study shows how the Dansk Retursystem deposit system in Denmark combines guidance and financial incentives to increase consumers’ recycling and reuse of packaging. Dansk Retursystem bottles and cans include a deposit fee that is refunded to consumers upon their return, including at reverse vending machines in participating grocery stores. The containers are then cleaned and refilled by the manufacturer or sent to be recycled.
